Black Lives Matter

As we progress under challenging conditions, human rights have altered dramatically. Especially the blacks within our society and the racial injustice continuing. This fight has inspired thousands of folks to take action. Currently, they are fighting for the assurance of basic human rights. We must help them support and strive for equality. There have been many petitions across the U.S., and the most significant petition seen in the U.S. was in New York. The movement became nationally recognized for street demonstrations following the 2014 death of Eric Garner in New York City. Since the protests, participants in the movement have demonstrated against the deaths of numerous other African Americans by police actions and/or while in police custody. The originators of the hashtag and call to action, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi, expanded their project into a national network of over 30 local chapters between 2014 and 2016. The overall Black Lives Matter movement is a decentralized network and has no formal hierarchy.

This focus is less about changing specific laws and more about fighting for a fundamental reordering of society wherein Black lives are free and equal. However, the movement’s measured impact on the federal and constitutional aspect is positive. In the U.S., petitions span across the states, people chant the names of those lost by police brutality, in the hopes to get justice for every black body lost to police brutality and systemic racism.

As protests against police brutality sweep across the United States and spread around the globe, urging cries of "Black Lives Matter" reverberate through our streets. As we all respond and participate, it is essential to recognize why the expression "All Lives Matter" is unsettled. At its face, "All Lives Matter" sounds like we're-all-in-this-together statement. But the problem is, the phrase takes the focus away from those who need it. Saying "All Lives Matter" redirects the attention of Black lives, who are the ones at risk.

On May 25, George Floyd, a black man, was viciously assassinated in Minneapolis, U.S. Derek Chauvin remained hunched on his neck, for eight minutes and forty-six seconds. Now, people of all races are looking for ways to help. Some ways to support this cause is by donating to a foundation that needs funding. Showing up to a protest can also impact your neighborhood. When you show up to a rally, you would know your friends and family, and you would influence them to join. Throughout history, these racist acts have occurred, and it is time to stand up for the guarantee of basic human rights. Additionally, signing a petition is also extremely powerful. Several petitions are circulating in the funeral of George Floyd’s killing, and you can add your voice. You can support political movements and parties that are campaigning against racism. From the original #BlackLivesMatter hashtag to the social media blackout, online campaigns have been one of the most efficient ways for people to raise awareness of this movement.

An essential factor in protests is the learning component. Study about the anti-racist struggle. Right now, a significant factor is to learn about the situation. Check out the various links posted on social media about police ruthlessness, racial difference, and systematic racism in countries. Furthermore, listen and absorb the stories and messages coming from the black community. Additionally, during this pandemic, support black creators and business owners. If you want to help people, the best way to start is by supporting black ventures.
